Eyes on Me
A song by Faye Wong
Eyes on Me is a song from the video game Final Fantasy VII. I think it holds a special place in my heart.
I once was very into Cantopop. The lyrics play the most crucial part of a song in the Chinese language. Lyrics come first, and melodies follow. I thought that the beauty and aesthetics of words and phrases it achieved where other languages couldn’t come close. Just like listening to a poem. It’s timeless. But in recent years, I stopped listening to Cantopop. Because most of the song’s subjects mostly are about love. Too narrow. I’m being subjective and I’ll need to widen my taste in music.
I realize one may find echoes from songs even if you don’t know the lyrics. Eyes on Me. A song sung by Faye Wong. It has been a while since I listened to the song. When I was young, I had no understanding of the lyrics and I don’t think that I cared. Not after I played the game and learnt the story. The lyrics are about a scene from the game. About a pair of lovers in the past where they’re being separated. Their story continues through their children even though they weren’t together.
I kind of liked it your way, how you shyly placed your eyes on me. Did you ever know that I had mine on you?
The melodies still linger after all these years. Time flies. Hopefully, a remake for the game in the near future. And this song has to be in it. The song is the spirit and soul of the tale.
