For the past three years, I’ve been using Apple Health and Fitbit Tracker to track my steps taken everyday. I managed to keep an average 10k steps a day over the course of a year.

Because of the Covid outbreak in Hong Kong, I didn’t go out that much on my day off unless I’ve important things to do. Well, that’s a pretty good excuse for staying at home. I’m such a nerd! I probably should go out and exercise more. Less screen time, I promise!

I don’t run because it’ll hurt my knees. I just keep counting steps and reminding myself to walk more. Aside from wanting myself to stay a bit healthier, my insurance fee will get a 10% discount if a customer of theirs can walk 10k steps a day in a year. Of course, I’ll have to synchronize the data to their app and that’s part of the deal. I did turn location service or sharing to off though.

Occasionally, I forgot to bring the Tracker with me when I’m going out. I think that’s probably 1X times the steps count were zero. The Fitbit app doesn’t even support dark mode and the tracker also doesn’t support 24-hour clock. (Turns out it does.) That’s barely legal.

Walking won’t get you enough fat burn or cardio. But this is a way to keep your body exercising at a bare minimum. I’m now planning to set my target daily step goal to 12k. Mark my words.

Don’t just stare at screens or sit on your couch. Go out to take a walk and get some fresh air. It helps, whatever you’re doing.

Keep walking, my friend.

  1. I didn’t enter any of my health/medical data into those apps other than essentials, such as height, weight, age, etc. ↩︎
  2. Earlier this year in March the fifth wave hits, reported around 200 people died a day. That’s a huge number for a 7.5 million people city. ↩︎
