I watched the movie when it was released in cinemas. After seeing it, I gotta tell you it’s not as bad as people have said about it. There’re certain elements that I like. A new take on the X-Men series with a group of young mutants. I like people trying new things and experimenting ideas, even if they fail. This is a re-watch of the movie.

First and foremost, this is a horror and thriller film rather than a mainstream X-Men movie. With that in mind, this is not a bad film to watch. Don’t look at the ratings or critic reviews just yet. Stop being a professional movie critic for a moment. Just enjoy it, shall we?

A group of young mutants are locked inside a facility and they’re all being monitored by Dr. Reyes who is employed by a secret corporation. They all have special abilities but are yet to be controlled or discovered. When a newcomer Dani joined the group, nightmares started to emerge. The young mutants soon realize they’ve a common enemy and try to fight against it.

I can see the director or writers trying to tell a story with a more character-focused narrative. The horror theme kind of works for me. I like the part where mysteries happen and they try to figure that out. It’s a bit too easy to predict though. Each of our heroes has to face their own fears and confront them. This is a story of how they transform and grow from teenagers and using their powers and become X-Men in the future.

The actors are all very young at a similar age. Both Maisie and Charlie are very recognizable from their previous works and of course their accents. Do you remember when you’re at school, there’s always a prettiest classmate in class who gets all the attention, and Anya acted exactly like that. Blu who’s supposed to be our protagonist, however, is the one that lacks charisma. Even the Dr. and the other guy are much more memorable than her.

So, this is my kind of review of the movie. Overall, it’s not a bad film by any means. Unlike any other superhero action flick you’ve probably seen before, I’d say it has its own uniqueness. By the way, the poster designs are quite good. I like how the handwritten type overlays their head shots while revealing their skull illustrations. The ending credits with the same type treatment, I like the yellow colour too.

Anyway, see you in the next review I guess.

My Afterthought

A new take on the X-Men series with a much younger cast. Nice try on the horror theme, but not quite there. It has flaws but it’s not bad.
